Cildo Meireles  (Brazilian, 1948)

Cildo Meireles (Brazilian, 1948) is a prominent Conceptual artist recognized for his installations, sculptures, and mixed media works. The ephemeral is a common theme in art, as evidenced in Eureka/Blindhotland, an installation of 200 black balls with which the viewer must physically interact. Insertions into Ideological Circuits, a project that showcases everyday consumer items coded with political implications, exemplifies Meireles’s resistance to military oppression in Brazil. Much of his work serves as a call to the viewer to take action, and he considers audience response to an artwork to be part of the artwork itself. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia in Salvador and at the Tate Modern in London. In 2008, Meireles won the Ordway Prize for his significant international impact on Contemporary art.
