Assume Vivid Astro Focus

Assume Vivid Astro Focus is a collective formed in 2001 in New York City. It consists of Eli Sudbrack (Brazilian, b.1968) and Christophe Hamaide-Pierson (French, b.1973). They also collaborate with other multimedia artists under the same name. The group combines installations, sculptures, paintings, and videos to create bright and colorful works that are meant to be a multi-sensory experience for the viewer. Sudbrack received his BA from Pontifica Universidade Catolica in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992, and Hamaide-Pierson graduated from the International Center of Photography in New York in 1999.

The collective name is a reference to the album Assume Power Focus by the industrial group Throbbing Gristle, and to the name of the alternative band Ultra Vivid Scene. Sudbrack formerly worked under the name Superastrolab until 2001, when he started to collaborate with Hamaide-Pierson. Many of their works have sexual as well as social and political undertones. One of their goals is to keep the viewers focus on the work itself by masking, literally and figuratively, the artists who contribute.

Their projects are meant to be experienced as they are in the moment; viewers are not meant to reference the history of the projects or the people behind them. In an effort to maintain the accessible nature of their work, Assume Vivid Astro Focus also have free downloads of their work available to print from their website. Their most recent solo exhibition, Cyclops Trannies, was shown at the Susan Geiss Company Gallery in New York in 2012. Assume Vivid Astro Focus works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, P.S.1, Deitch Projects, Centro Contemporaneo La Conservera, Galerie Hussenot, Peres Projects, Hiromi Yoshii Gallery, and John Connelly Presents. They are represented by Peres Projects in Berlin and John Connelly Presents in New York.
