Émile Antoine Bourdelle  (French, 1861-1929)

Emile Antoine Bourdelle (French, 1861–1929) was a sculptor and painter. He was born in Montauban, France, the birthplace of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French, 1780–1867). At 13, he began work as a wood carver in his father’s shop, where he was able to hone his skills as a draftsman. He began his art education with the founder of the Ingres Museum, and subsequently attended L’Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, where he studied sculpture. At the age of 24, he was awarded a scholarship to L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It was there that he caught the eye of August Rodin (French, 1840–1917), who took him on as an assistant between 1893 and 1908.

Bourdelle was greatly influenced by Greek mythology and Roman art. One of his greatest masterpieces is his Monument to the Defenders of Montauban, which he designed between 1895 and 1902. In 1900, he created the work Head of Apollo, signifying a shift toward more classical sculpture. His first salon triumph came with 1910’s Herakles, which also shows the clear influence of archaic Greek and Romanesque techniques. Two years later, he created reliefs for the Théatre des Champs-Elysées. After being commissioned for several monuments and war memorials, Bourdelle participated in the 1913 Armory Show in New York and founded the Parisian Salon des Tuileries. In 1924, he became a commander of the Legion of Honor. He died just outside of Paris in 1929. The Musée Bourdelle was erected in 1949, which preserves Bourdelle’s studio and contains more than 500 works, including works from the artist’s personal collection.
