Hilaire Hiler was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1898. He began to paint at the age of four. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Pennsylvania. He continued his studies in France where he lived for fifteen years.

Hiler was a Modernist. He helped found the idea of 'Structuralism' which aims to create harmony by the presentation of organized color and form. Structuralism design is made for contemplation.

Hiler’s works are in many museums including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of New Mexico, Oakland Museum of California, Portland Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and Georgia Museum of Art. His work is in numerous private collections in the United States and abroad. To name a few—

John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
Chevy Chase
John Rex
William Wilder
Henry Miller
