1946 - 1948   Sentenced to six months imprisonment at Wormwood Scrubs as conscientious objector, followed by 18 months farm work in Harrow
1948 - 1951   Post-graduate student at the Royal College of Art
1950 - 1951   Young Contemporaries exhibitions, RBA Galleries
1953   Designed set and costumes for ‘A Mirror of Witches', produced by the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden
1954   Mural commission at Broad Lane Comprehensive School, Coventry
1955   Sets for Sadler’s Wells production of ‘Saudades’
1955   Moved to ‘Butts’ farmhouse, Horton-in- Ribblesdale, Yorkshire
1956   Birth of their son Jacob
1958   Birth of their son Benjamin
1950 - 1959   Teaching at St. Alban’s, Hammersmith and Maidstone art-schools
1967   Commissioned by Oxford University Press to illustrate part of Old Testament

1969   Bought croft (sheiling) on Outer Hebridean island of Scarp and spent next ten summers there

1975   Commission to make 14 ceramic panels on the Stations of the Cross for Roman Catholic church in Milton Keynes

1987   Honorary Member of the Royal Watercolour Society
1994   Commission to paint the Fourteen Stations of the Cross for St Mary’s (RC) Church, Manchester (Shown prior to installation at the Royal Academy’s Diploma Galleries)
1986 - 1995   Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools (also elected to honorary title of Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools)
1995   Elected Professor of Painting Emeritus, Royal Academy
