Jules-Alexandre Grün was a French painter, illustrator, and poster artist. His lively and colorful works are said to have directly contributed to the rebirth of lithography. Grun was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Lavastre, the famed theatrical decorator of the Paris Opera, and of Antoine Guillemet, a renowned landscape painter. Grun's favorite artistic subjects included still life, portraits, and scenes of Parisian life. In fact, many art historians would attest that he and Jules Cheret transformed the established standard of late 19th century Parisian street scenes. Grun exhibited with the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris in 1887, and was later classified hors concours, becoming a member of the committee and jury. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneue and awarded the Merite Agricole as well. He was also among the many writers and artists (such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec) who frequented the Chat Noir cabaret in Montmartre.
