Like other painters of Parisian street scenes of his generation, Pierre Vauthier concentrated on painting the atmosphere of the city rather than its precise topography. He was an exact contemporary of Luigi Loir (they were both born in the same year and also died in the same year) and like him often chose the muddier, smokier corners of this most fashionable city.

Vauthier was born in Pernambuco of French parents and came to Paris to study under Lalanne. He made his exhibiting debut at the Salon of 1874 and in 1885 became a member of the Artistes Francais. Throughout his life, he received much recognition for his work. He received an honourable mention in 1884, a third-class medal in 1887, an honourable mention at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, a second-class medal in 1895 and a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. His work is represented in many museums such as the Petit-Palais in Paris and also in Bourges, Chambéry, Draguignan, Moulins and Antwerp.
