The City of San Sebastian commissions a statue to commemorate Sir Alexander Fleming, for the Ategoprieta Garden; Chillida executes the work in stone. (It subsequently disappears. A new version has now been installed on the promenade of Donostia Bay)

Awarded the prize of the Graham Foundation, Chicago; the committee includes Mies van der Rohe and James Johnson Sweeney

Elected a Royal Academician by the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and receives the European Prize for Fine Arts in Strasbourg

Receives the Kaiserring prize, awarded by the city of Goslar (West Germany); Werner Schmalenbach gives the official tribute. Reiner Moritz produces a television film about Chillida. Receives the Wolf Foundation prize for Sculpture in Israel.

Starts working on a monument in Guernica, a commission commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the destruction of the town in the Spanish Civil War; the monument with the Basque title 'Gure Aitaren Etxea' is inaugurated in April 1988.
