Born in Chatelaillon on Octoboer 22, 1861, Lenoir endured a troubled childhood, only to grow into one of the more iconic artists of the 19th century. Though he began his career as teacher, Lenoir worked and saved enough money so that he could devote all of his time to painting. In 1882, Lenoir competed in the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, followed by admittance to the Julian Academy where he polished his artistic skills. Numerous quotes from his colleagues were recorded, which note Lenoir’s ambition to succeed in the arts. Due to this drive, in 1889 he placed second grade at the Second Grand Prix de Rome, followed by first grade in 1890.
Throughout his career Lenoir continued to gain attention for his work, however, it was not until the 21st century that he became a fashionable artist. In honour of his memory, a room in the house that he occupied in Fouras has been preserved exactly as he left it. His drawings, paintings, and furniture display a timeline of the genius of Lenoir.
