1854   Hippolyte Petitjean was born September 11 in Macon where he studied at the local art school.
1872   Moved to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He worked in the studios of Cabanel and Puvis de Chavannes, the latter leaving a lasting impression on the young painter.
1880   He first showed at the Salon in 1880.
1884   The most significant event in Petitjean's development: meeting Seurat
1886   After two years, he joins the Neo-Impressionist group and shows his first work in this style in 1887
1891   He first exhibited with the Salon des Indépendants in 1891and remained faithful to them from thereon. One can often see the influence of the symbolists in his carefully constructed landscapes and figures, but he was a pointillist at heart until his death in 1929.
1910   Returned to a Neo-Impressionist manner in a series of decorative watercolors. These works depicted both landscapes and people with a remarkable shimmering effect created by individual spots of pure color.
1893 - 1921   Participated in several international Pointillist exhibitions.
1929   He died.
