As well as being a talented and successful painter, Albert André was a respected writer and museum curator. Andre received his initial art training in Lyon and began his career designing patterns for silk, the city’s main industry. He went on to study in Paris at the Académie Julian from 1890, and there met Valtat, Maurice Denis and Bonnard and became part of the Post-Impressionist movement. The most important influence on his work was Auguste Renoir, who first saw André’s paintings in 1894 at the Salon des Independants and was so impressed that he recommended Andre to the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. André’s monograph, “Renoir” (1919) is one of the most accurate contemporary accounts of the artist’s work. After the First-World-War he returned to Laudun where his family owned vineyards and took charge of the Museum of Bagnols-sur-Ceze from 1917-1954.
