After 5 years of studies at the Academy of Brera at Milan, he leaves for Paris where he meets Wilfredo Lam and Matta. The work of these two inheritors of surrealism will be profondly influential.

The Documenta III of Cassel consecrates a room to him. Carlos Fuentes writes about his painting.

1971 |
|
Realized a full-length film with his brother Giancarlo, 'Vacances dans le désert'; Erro and Dino Buzzati appear in it.

Italo Calvino publishes Quatre fables d'Esope for Valério Adami.

A version of his notebook is published by Plon with the title Les règles du montage. For the celebrations marking the bicentennial of the French Revolution, the Ministry of Defense commissions a picture of the Battle of Valmy. Produces a large scale fresco for theThéâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Octavio Paz writes la linéa narrativa. Paints a portrait of Giacomo Leopardi. Begins work on a cycle of political pictures. including Pace in Medio Oriente.

Upon the death of his father he paints L’angelo.

He makes four large wall paintings for for the Hyatt Park Hotel Tokyo.

From Tokyo he travels to Sri Lanka. Also to Argentina in Buenos Aires. Afetr reading W.B. Yeat’s Calvary paints a crucifixion scene entitled named Calvario. Paints a portrati of his friend Luciano Berio.

Travels to India. Commissioned by Giancarlo Menotti to design the poster for the Spoleto Festival. Leaves for Israel.

His mother dies and he dedicates to her the painting Par Cœur. An italian edition of his notebook is published by SE with the title Sinopie. Sets up the Fondazione Europea del Designo at Meina , on Lake Maggiore. Paints a portrait of Herman Hesse. Antonio Tabucchi writes about his work in Les Céphalées du Minotaure.

Leaves for a long trip to India where he returns to visit Gandhi’s ashram. Shares his work and time between Meina, Italy and his studios in Paris and Monte-Carlo.

A text by Amelia Valtolina is published to accompany the catalogue of the solo exhibition hold at the Galerie Forsblom in Helsinki. Gives lectures of Cezanne in the artist’s home of Aix-en-Provence. A French edition of his notebook is published by Edition Galilée with the title Dessiner : la gomme et les crayons. Curates an exhibition exploring the notion of « closed shape drawing » at IVAM Valencia, Spain.

Teatro San Carlo, Naples commissions him with the stage design of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. Completes two large scale paintings for the New Mandarin New York.

2005 |

He designs the poster for the Cinema Festival of Locarno and also participates in the jury. During the autumn, the university of Minho in Braga, Portugal, organizes a seminar on his work.

He publishes the book Adami with Maeght. Jean-Luc Nancy devotes a book to Adami’s portrait of Derrida titled A plus d’un titre (Editions Galilée).
