Kowasa Gallery presents the exhibition Sacred Places by Claudia Terstappen from December 17, 2003 to January 31, 2004. The exhibition consists of approximately 17 photographs. The work of Terstappen is neither a documentation of historic sites, nor ethnographic notes, but perceptions and impressions of places which are home to gods, the dead, and to the imaginations of times past. From the deserts of the Navajo to the moutains and shores of Iceland, we are transported to seemingly otherworldly places, primordial lansdcapes, where the mundane is tranformed into the mystical. Terstappen’s travels and encounters have not only expanded her horizon, but they have also offered a new depth. From her images, it is evident that the photographer is not so much interested in the external, but mainly in the content that we experience. The camera may document the superficial aspect of an object. However, only through the sensibility of the photographer can its most intimate secrets be reached. Claudia Terstappen was born in Arnsberg, Germany. Her photopgraphs have been exhibited internationally, including at the Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf, White Columns, New York City, The Slade Gallery, London, and Sendai, Japan. www.kowasa.comgaleria@kowasa.com
