DESCRIPTION:  Published by La Revue Blanche on the cover/third page of the NIB supplement accompanying their 1 January 1895 issue
Nine in public collections

Towards the end of 1894, Lautrec began preliminary work on a project that had long been close to his heart. Entitle ‘Nib'-a slang expressions, meaning ‘nothing special'-this four-page supplement with original prints and texts by celebrated artists and writers was to be published under Lautrec's direction, in co-production with La Revue Blanche, on a monthly basis. However, although it was small and included a whole page of advertisements, the project had to be dropped for cost reasons after only three had appeared, designed by Lautrec, Bonnard and Vallotton. Three lithographs printed on one sheet by Ancourt, Paris, appeared in the first of these, which was co-edited with Tristan Bernard and published with No. 39 of La Revue Blanche on 1 January 1895. The title page is an amusing an ironic depiction of the amateur photographer, in the person of the actor Lenoble, who is proudly taking the world home in his little box. A portrait of the Polish singer, Anna Held, followed on the third page, opposite a political report by Tristan Bernard. The back of verso of the frame has been cut away here so as to see this portrait of Held.
