DESCRIPTION:  The church of St Remy was built between 1522-1640 and is Dieppe's second largest church. In the distance of the composition are houses in the former rue Farinette (now rue 19 aout 1942).

Dr Wendy Baron comments on this work, “The trees in the foreground and background are fuller and taller than in earlier versions. The design is the same as the Bernheim family painting, except striations in the surface of the road are indicated in the immediate foreground and a cart in included in the rue St Remy on the left.

Unusually for Sickert’s Dieppe compositions of this period, this work is dated.

This painting illustrates Sickert's masterly use of paint, capturing a street scene that is as alive today as when it was painted, almost 100 years ago.
