DESCRIPTION:
|
Moore made his first sculptures with string after looking at mathematical models at the Science Museum. He began using carved wood in 1937, followed by small models in plaster, which he then cast in lead, replacing the strings with wire. Most subsequent sculptures were conceived to be cast in metal, like this bronze made after the 1939 lead version.
Moore contrasts the lightness of the strings with the weighty form of the bronze. The strings cut through the negative space, like a drawing suspended in air, leading our eye around the abstracted female form and demarcating the hollow centre from the space outside.
