Art Web site collects subscribers and profits Artnet breaks down dealer resistance and changes the way art is bought and sold By Miriam Kreinin Souccar (Excerpt) It's taken a decade, but Artnet has become a force that dealers in the clubby art market can no longer ignore. One of the rare survivors of the Internet bubble, when more than 100 art sites were created, Artnet is changing the way that pieces are bought and sold. The Manhattan-based site--which specializes in information, from the price history of every artwork sold at auction to an inventory of galleries around the world--is democratizing the market. Since collectors can find out what galleries paid for the art that they are hawking, dealers can no longer mark up prices as high as they'd like. In turn, dealers have access to more collectors than ever before. "Artnet has made it a much more competitive market, and one where individuals are getting fairer deals," says Jonathan Binstock, curator of contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Easily identifiable by his trademark helmet of silver hair, he was, as usual, impeccably armored in a designer suit. He warmly greeted a procession of collectors and socialites, then pumped the hand of the ubiquitous art-world wag Charlie Finch, who had just posted a news item on artnet about the titillating scandal hovering over Gagosian’s art empire—the U.S. government’s lawsuit against the dealer and three others for a whopping $26.5 million in taxes, interest, and penalties on art allegedly purchased through a shell corporation in 1990. |

The Andy Warhol silkscreen is an apt symbol for the company's chief executive, Hans Neuendorf, who has survived a blood bath in the online art world and is fighting his way to profitability. As an Information tool, however, the Internet is popular with galleries eager to display their inventories to prospective clients. Most of the major U.S. galleries have signed on with artnet. The database has 3,300 subscribers-auction houses, galleries, dealers and collectors-who use it to quickly check the value of comparable pieces...artnet has several competitors for art price information, but none offer the ability to clearly see the artworks being described." |

www.artnet by Charlotte Mulins and Emily Smit (Excerpt) Artists represented by the site's "member" galleries number an impressive 13,000. Their portfolios are arranged alphabetically, which is again simple to view. There is an art finder request form you can submit to find an artist, exhibition or museum listing. To aid you in this, galleries are listed in categories. Links to the galleries are quick. From gallery, auction and museum listings, it is obvious that this site is truly international. Auction listings span the month ahead and are incredibly detailed, even providing sale numbers. The bookstore doesn't stop at reviews, but is divided into subject areas such as new releases, current exhibitions, catalogues raisonnes etc. Artnet Magazine has a remarkable number of features, reviews and news stories. There are art services that include appraisers, art insurance services, career management and shipping, to name but a few. For a subscriber's fee, you can enlist the services of the fine art auctions database to track down specific lots. One of the most useful service Artnet offers, however, is in the field of research. Whether you are a dealer, a collector or a specialist in your field, this is an invaluable tool, with links like the Grove Dictionary of Art, museums, fairs and auction databases. The auction database lists a staggering two million auction records from more than 176,000 artists. This, in particular, is where Artnet lives up to its name as one of the foremost art engines of our time. |

Pulling Strings in the Art World
by Brigitte Ulmer (Excerpt, English Translation) Simon de Pury, CEO of the auction house Phillips, even considers Neuendorf a "visionary" who has moved the art market forward via the Internet. "artnet has changed the structure of the art market," says Achim Möller, an emigrated German art dealer who runs an art business on Manhattan’s Upper East side. "The database is an added pricing tool for the dealer. Now, everyone knows the sale price for a particular work sold at auction." |

Art Works for your Wall and your Wallet by Gary Drevitch (Excerpt) Most art professionals have the same advice for would-be collectors: Buy the art you love, and only the art you love. Still, art is an investment, so do your homework before putting your money down. That means making sure that any piece you buy is authentic, that its price is fair, and that you can be reasonably confident of its resale value. One place to start your research is artnet, a massive database of artists, galleries and individual works. The site futures the auction sales records for tens of thousands of individual pieces, so you can get an idea of the fair market value of almost any artists. |

artnet Suspends Online Auctions but may Partner with the New eBay Premier by Lisa W. Romano (Excerpt) The fine art niche in online auctions has lost a small but important player as artnet announces it will discontinue its e-commerce operations, which included online auctions and a print store. While the honeymoon for e-commerce ventures, such as eToys, seems to be over and concerns about profits for others are on the rise, Artnet fortunately has a more successful core business to fall back on as an information provider: its artnet Magazine as well as its gallery network, fine art bookstore and fine art auctions database. "I remain still an enthusiastic supporter of online art auctions but our Gallery Network has clearly been the more successful service to the art community," said artnet CEO and founder Hans Neuendorf in a prepared statement. "This move puts the company on a speedier path to profitability." (more) |

Net Scrapes by Barbara Pollack (Excerpt) Do your homework. Check the market value of the work you're considering buying. The Internet itself is a good place to start. Onview.com, for example, which represents some 325 galleries, gives current retail prices. And auction database artnet provides access (for an annual subscription price of $30 and up) to 2 million auction results from more than 500 auction houses worldwide, dating back to 1989. Collectors also can consult Christie's Lot Finder or Sothebys.com, whose database contains the results of recent sales. |

Revenge of the Nerds (Excerpt) Christie's and Sotheby's have a lot more than justice to worry about. They've got people like Julie Rosefsky, a 30-year-old lawyer who attends all the Museum of Modern Art young collector events. She goes on the gallery tours. She consumes information on the Web. "Maybe there's an Old World charm when you walk into Christie's, but the Net is going to open doors to a lot more buyers," she says. "What's great about the Internet is you get a lot of information in your own home, without being made to feel like you are asking embarrassing questions. It breaks down the aura of intimidation." Rosefsky recently made one of her first purchases-a black-and-white photograph by Mario Giacomelli that she bought for $1,700. But she didn't buy it at Christie's, she bought it at artnet, an all-purpose site with gallery listings from 1,000 dealers, its own database and online auctions. "When you walk into an auction house, just to register to bid, you have to show your financial status," she says. "But to bid online all you need is your American Express card." Rosefsky isn't going to change her mind about this, and as Christie's and Sotheby's know full well, her credit limit is only going to go up. |

The Faces of Power: Pioneer Power, Hans Neuendorf by Steven Vincent (Excerpt) Art & Auction once again surveys those people who, in the opinion of our editors and writers, have had an important impact this year on the art world's many sectors. We look at who's up, who's down - any why. In addition, we profile in depth two men, Musée Guimet director Jean-François Jarrige and Internet pioneer Hans Neuendorf, and one TV program, Antiques Roadshow, that we believe each represent, in their very different ways, significant forces for renewal and change. |

Warhol Meets Your Wall by Alexandra Peers (Excerpt) Many of his prints are ubiquitous, of course, at galleries and on dot-com art sites. But savvy collectors prefer buying from the original print publisher, like Ronald Feldman Fine Arts in New York. One tip before buying: Skim old auction catalogs (sometimes available at galleries) to see what's sold, and what hasn't, and at what prices. Online sites Artfact Inc. and artnet sell such information to subscribers, but preliminary data is available without membership. |

Cutting-Edge Opportunities: Benefit Auction Benefits Buyers, Artists and ICI at artnet by Lisa W. Romano In a combined act of charitable giving and exposure for its services, artnet sponsored its sixth online benefit auction, on behalf of Independent Curators International, in October. The event had two components: a two-week online auction of 30 items, and a silent auction of 32 items at ICI's 25th Anniversary Gala in New York City on October 26. "We had the lots online for two weeks in advance of the night of the event," said Karen Amiel, artnet's VP of Content Development and Promotion. "What's nice about this is that we do a preview online of the lots which are available at the event, and we do an online auction. (more) |

Beginners and Experts Alike Vie for Picasso Creations on the Internet by Lisa W. Romano artnet's recent Picasso auction might best be described as having something for everyone: the 65 prints, ceramics and drawings offered covered a price spectrum from $1,000 to above $20,000. But what the organizers noticed, and may even have been aiming for, was the participation of beginning collectors. (more) |
