New York, NY/Frankfurt September 21, 2000 At the close of the largest online auction ever held of Andy Warhol artworks, artnet, the premier site on the web for art content and art e-commerce, announced that it had achieved the highest price ever recorded for a graphic work on the Internet. This sale also shattered previous records set by both Christies and Sothebys. With the launch of its Picasso auction, which runs until September 26, artnet promises to continue its remarkable season.
artnets Warhol sale, which ran from August 14-31 and included 90 prints, paintings and drawings, achieved such record-breaking prices as Campbells Soup Can I, 1967, a portfolio of ten screenprints that fetched $64,000. This was the highest published price ever paid on an Internet auction for a graphic artwork and is also a new world record for the piece, outdistancing the previous price of $62,000 set back in 1989 by Sothebys. The new price is dramatic when compared to recent brick and mortar auction figures - last year, the portfolio sold for $34,500 at Christie's, and $43,700 at Sotheby's. Another new record from artnets Warhol auction is Flower, 1970, which sold for $12,550.
"As demonstrated in our Warhol auction, we are beginning to see more solid proof that the Internet is changing the way people buy art," said Hans Neuendorf, CEO of artnet, who started the online auctions in April 1999.
In the wake of its success, artnet launched the worlds first major online auction of works by Pablo Picasso, running September 8-25, with over 50 prints, ceramics and drawings. At the end of the first weekend, the auction had already attracted selling bids on many works.
artnet has planned several more exciting auctions for the fall:
Keith Haring (9/25-10/10) Jacob Lawrence (9/27-10/12) From Man Ray to Newton: Fashion Photography (10/2-10/17) Marc Chagall (10/16-10/31) Richter, Polke and Beuys (10/18-10/31) Romare Bearden (10/25-11/9) American Masterprints (10/25-11/9) Modern and Contemporary Icons (11/1-16) The Classic Nude in Photography (11/6-21) Roy Lichtenstein (11/20-12/7) Vander Zee, Parks, Higgins Black Photography (11/22-12/5)
All of the works in artnets Auctions are authenticated and vetted internally by our team of specialists. In addition, artnet enhances its Auctions with an illustrated overview of the artist(s) featured, as well as a detailed description of select works in the sale. Bidders can find more works and information about a featured artist, such as Picasso or Warhol, on our 1,100 Gallery web sites, Printstore, Fine Arts Auctions Database, Bookstore and Magazine.
