artnet Introduces the First Appraisal Tool for African Art Market
-- The African Art Auctions Database --

New York, NY July 18, 2000 artnet, the leader in online art information and e-commerce, has launched another revolutionary research service, the African Art Auctions Database (AAAD), the first appraisal tool for the African Art Market.

Based on artnet's highly successful Fine Art Auctions Database, the African Art Auctions Database is the most comprehensive resource for the African art marketplace, which has historically been extremely difficult to research and void of a market overview. Containing over 38,000 auction results (many with images) dating from 1927 to the present, spanning over 90 international auction houses, it is the ultimate research tool for collectors and scholars specializing in African Art, or anyone who is curious and wants to learn more about this intriguing marketplace. The African Art Auctions Database includes an enormous range of objects, from figures to weapons to furniture, and represents tribes throughout Africa, such as the Ashanti, Senufo and Yoruba, to name just a few. Subscribers can search this unique proprietary database by tribe, area, style and country; by attributes, such as its size and medium; by cult or the name of the object and the society it belongs to; by exhibitions and literature; by auction saleroom location; and by price for which the work sold.

This subscription-based service will cost $59.95 a month per user with unlimited searches. As a special promotion for the launch, the African Art Auctions Database will be free to all users until July 31st and will then be offered at a discounted rate of $39.95 through the end of January 2001.
