Big Apple memento
The most contested lot at Christie's on Jan. 19 just might be the John Jay Freedom box, a gold snuffbox presented by the Corporation of the City of New York to the statesman in 1784. Only four of these items were made (other recipients included George Washington and John Jay, president of the Continental Congress). Jay's is distinguished by its original presentation parchment. Lot 354 is estimated at $400,000-$800,000.
