The earliest George Washington
The first likeness of Washington as commander in chief of the 13 original colonies is up for grabs at Christie's on Jan. 18. Painted in New York by Irish-born artist John Ramage in 1789, the miniature in a rose gold frame contains a braided plait of his hair, no less, and was a gift to his wife Martha. Lot 84 carries an estimate of $800,000-$1,200,000.
