At the height of her watercolor period, Margaret Fisher spent the month of October 1936 in New Mexico, visiting her friend Alice Henderson Evans (daughter of Santa Fe poet Alice Corbin Henderson and artist William Penhallow Henderson) and painting the country near Evans' home in Tesuque.
That house, "El Cuevo" had been redesigned by Henderson in 1927 when he added the unusual second floor, recognizable in the Fisher painting owned by the New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts. It was to this house that Henderson himself later returned, dying there in 1943. "El Cuevo" is Spanish for "raven" and cognate with the French word "corbin", the maiden name of Mrs. Henderson.
As Fisher wrote in her journals from Santa Fe, "when the sun sets the mountains behind us turn a brilliant rose madder and in a few minutes a deep blue. Then all the color goes out and they are silhouetted against the sky like a stage set."
Fisher's bold watercolors were quickly recognized for their strong line, sense of color, and composition. Several of the New Mexican watercolors formed part of a one-artist show arranged by Duncan Phillips in 1939 at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. Mr. Phillips purchased one of the New Mexico pieces for the collection.
