JULIE HEDRICK
AWAKENING
April 29 – May 24, 2008

“Aboriginal Creation myths tell of legendary totemic beings who wandered the continent in the "Dreamtime", singing out the name of everything that crossed their path- birds, animals, plants, rocks, water holes- and so singing the world into existence. I am certain that from the beginning of human time, the artist as witness, has observed, processed, transmuted and recorded the world around them for the “Awakening “of the world."
-Hedrick

“Observe the wonders as they occur around you. Don't claim them. Feel the artistry moving through and be silent.”
-Rumi

Awakening, Julie Hedrick’s new works, are visual poems that capture the murmurs of nature, the evocation of land, water and sky. The 10 paintings included in this exhibition are lush in the translucency of their bright colors and hues. They are a departure from her previous series of interior and reflective works. The current works are more a meditation on nature.

Based on the artist’s daily contemplative walks around the Hudson River Valley, they unveil nature recalling mist, water, sky, earth, light and leaves. Hedrick captures the sacred essence of landscapes and environments particularly now struggling for survival.

These constructed polyptychs are reminiscent of the altar pieces of the Renaissance, representing the colors of the natural world imbued with a sense of the sublime. They are metaphors for the tremendous power of life and nature and a homage to existence.
