FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SEAN BLUCHEL: THE SUSPENSION OF HIERARCHY
OCTOBER 2 – NOVEMBER 27, 2009
ARTIST’S RECEPTION FRIDAY OCTOBER 2, 6-9PM
THE SUSPENSION OF HIERARCHY is the second New York solo exhibition from Sean Bluechel. Known for his rigorous studio practice involving a variety of materials and approaches, the idea behind
the title is the understanding that any single element from this body of work is necessary and with equal importance as all other elements. The notion claims that without even the smallest gestures, the larger efforts can not truly be seen as intended, and that all parts are equal.
In this new body, Bluechel presents several groupings from his past months addiction to ceramics, creating and appropriating forms to appear jumbled in structure and color. At interest for Bluechel is the seductive looseness of the ceramic medium in contrast to its finite state when the work is completed after firing.
Sean Bluechel received his BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute, followed by his MFA from Yale School of Art focusing in sculpture. His work was represented and featured in the past years by Guild and Greyshkul, Amy Smith-Stewart, and Mary Boone. Bluechel was included in the survey “Greater New York 2005” (PS1), and most recently “Basic Fun”, July 2009, at Jason Rulnick Inc. Sean Bluechel was born in 1969 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
