ArtZone 461 presents in the main gallery Recurring Dreams of Light Through the Trees, a new series of paintings by Gage Opdenbrouw. He veers from his usual realist approach, reducing imagery into a rhythm of vertical and horizontal brushstrokes; the result is a fresh perspective on American landscape painting. A second solo show in the side gallery features a survey of works (1947 to date) by historic Bay Area artist Jose Ramon Lerma. He is among the important artists whose careers are most associated with the San Francisco school of Abstract-Expressionism.
Gage Opdenbrouw memorializes visions from his dreams and experiences. Light and space and painted marks are as much or more the subject than trees or forests, offering an opportunity for a more immediate and visceral response. The scale is larger in order to more physically engage the viewer, the colors brighter, the individual marks more apparent. They distill space, air, light and color, even time, and weave a tapestry of many layers of paint and decision. This fusion creates a shifting sense of space, at once quiet -- though not still.
Gage received his BA in Painting/Drawing from the Academy of Art University; he lives and works in SF. He is an award-winning artist academically and in several juried shows; he has had solo and group exhibitions nationwide since 2001.
Jose Ramon Lerma studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, 1949 – 1951 and the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, 1954 – 1958. Early on he was influenced by the ‘Mexican School’ – as were many of his post WWII colleagues. Lerma’s style evolved following exposure to the teachers and students of abstract expressionism and nearly his entire body of work embraces it and pays homage to dada and surrealism.
In addition to painting Lerma has done assemblage, collage, constructions, drawings and made prints. His work has been in several gallery and museum shows since 1955.
