Lohin Geduld Gallery is proud to present our third exhibition of paintings by Jay Milder.

Jay Milder has long been a powerful and influential artist in the New York art scene. From his early studies with Hans Hofmann, Milder learned the dynamic language of push pull Abstract Expressionism. To this he added a mystical belief system encompassing Kabbalistic numerology, Eastern philosophy and Byzantine space, resulting in works that combine the exuberance of pure painting with shamanistic ritual and the desire to communicate universal truths.

As a founding member of the influential Rhino Horn Group, Milder became a leading exponent of Figurative Expressionism, a movement that challenged the cool calculations of Minimalism and Pop Art. Biblical references and numerology float through Milder’s canvases as eye-popping colors and textures communicate the excitement of revelation. His paintings contain an encoded collective knowledge, which is revealed through the artist’s ritualistic studio practice. Milder combines the pleasure of a child-like scrawl with the contemplation of a Theosophy scholar.

Milder’s paintings make visible the search for understanding. Their physical urgency conveys a joyful struggle. They are an unfolding mystery, filled with the excitement of reaching for something just beyond our grasp.

Jay Milder was the subject of two recent career retrospectives at the National Museum, Brasilia, 2007, and the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 2006, Brazil. He has also exhibited in numerous national and international galleries and museums. Milder’s work has been in publications including Art in America, ArtForum, The New York Times, and Arts Magazine and is in the permanent collections of The Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC; Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY; The Newark Museum, Newark, NJ; The New Museum, New York, NY; Tel Aviv Museum, Tel Aviv, Israel; and Weatherspoon Art Gallery, Greensboro, NC among others.

Jay Milder lives and works in New York City, NY and Easton, PA.
