Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) spent the summers of 1917 and 1918 in Braunlage, in the Harz Mountains. The exquisite drawings that date from this period mark an important moment in the evolution of artist’s work. While the drawings of 1917 show subtle pencil strokes with rich contrasts and cubistic form, those from 1918 exhibit very little nuanced shading. A strong formal connection to Feininger’s woodcuts is evident in the later work.

Feininger began making woodcuts in 1918, executing more than one hundred that year alone. The striking stylistic change during that occurred between 1917 and 1918, from the cubistic manner to the woodcut influenced technique, would prove to have a significant impact on Feininger’s paintings of the Bauhaus era.

Illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition available.
