Qin Fengling – Solo Exhibition
Curated by David A. Parker
CHICAGO, IL: David Parker Fine Arts (DPFA), in conjunction with kasia kay art projects gallery, is pleased to present Qin Fengling’s first exhibition in the United States.
I don’t think my creation is a sort of passion. It is an expression of life, an expression of the feeling of life... an everyday routine process… just a part of life and nothing else. – Qin Fengling
In the mid-19th century, Charles Baudelaire exhorted artists to be “painters of modern life,” observing and taking note of the everyday as chroniclers of their age. Chinese artist Qin (pronounced “Chin”) Fengling embodies this approach. Through a luscious and vibrantly colored impasto technique, her works deliver the experience of China’s vast, collective society in the throes of modern transformation.
Qin has been painting for more than 20 years and is largely self-taught, but only recently has she begun to exhibit her work publicly. The sensuously sculptural nature of her works derives from her squeezing paint directly from the tube to form masses of tiny human figures, each bearing a painted facial expression, arrayed in dense patterns that fill the visual field. The works are microcosmic snapshots of China’s “quarter of humanity” as it surges toward an uncertain future.
The exhibition will feature works on canvas, sketches on paper, and a large installation piece. A full catalogue with an essay by Robert C. Morgan will be available. The exhibition opens on September 5, 2008 and closes on October 11.
Qin Fengling’s work will exhibit an installation work at the DeVos Art Museum in Marquette, MI from September 15 through early December.
