DFN Gallery is pleased to present The Model Project by Barbara Nessim, featuring large-scale digital collages printed on aluminum panels. Since the beginning of her career, Barbara Nessim has been using art to challenge traditional values in society. During the Women's Movement of the late 60s and early 70s, her art reflected the questions surrounding the accepted roles for women. The Model Project continues her examination of traditional thinking, focusing on the ideas surrounding society's perception of beauty. This series began in 2008 with a fashion photo shoot and interactions between a model, a photographer, and an artist. The artist and the photographer each perceived the model differently. By deconstructing and reassembling the visual elements of a typical high-end fashion photo shoot, Nessim reexamines current concepts of beauty. Lips, hair, breasts, and legs are recombined with jewelry and clothes in jarring compositions.
Barbara Nessim has been a vital contributor and influential visionary in the art world over the past several decades. A digital art pioneer, Nessim helped shape the MFA Computer Arts Program at the School of Visual Arts, and was Chairperson of Illustration at Parsons School of Design for 12 years. Her work has graced the covers of Time, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and many other publications. Nessim was honored on September 26, 2009 as the first Artist Laureate of The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Her artwork is included in many private and public collections including the permanent collections of The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., and the Lund Konsthall in Lund, Sweden. Most recently, the artist has been commissioned to create large-scale works for various building lobbies in New York City.
