Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts is pleased to present Partners in Modernism: The Art of Marguerite and William Zorach, an exhibition of works by these two pioneering American modernists. Encompassing paintings, watercolors, sculpture and drawings that span nearly six decades of artistic production, the show charts each artist’s stylistic development while evidencing the unique dialogue that sustained their personal and artistic partnership.
As students in Paris, Marguerite and William encountered the aesthetic innovations of Henri Matisse and the Fauves, whose interest in bold colors and decorative rhythms informed the budding artists’ early works. Upon their return to the United States, which was marked by their marriage in December of 1912, the two also began experimenting with Cubist reorganization of space and form. Motivated by these formal investigations, William turned to sculpting, eventually becoming one of the most prominent practitioners of direct carving. Marguerite, on the other hand, continued to produce avant-garde oil paintings, while also embarking on the creation of elaborate tapestries, a practice that engaged in the quintessential modernist project of effacing the boundary between art and life.
Living in New York City for most of the year, the couple found spiritual renewal during their summer vacations, when they escaped the concrete spaces of the city and reveled in the unspoiled richness of nature. Whether inspired by the waterfalls of Yosemite National Park, the harbors of Maine and Massachusetts, the mountains of New Hampshire or the visages of their loved ones, the two were united in the aim of capturing the universal qualities of their subject through the use of expressive form and color.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
