Biography
1839 Attended Canon Poiloup’s school in Vaugirard
1844 - 1848 Attended the College Rollin
1848 Apprenticed on a transport vessel
1849 Returned to France and failed the naval exam a second time
1850 - 1856 Studied under classical painter Thomas Couture
1856 Manet set up a studio shared with Albert de Balleroy
1861 Paintings were accepted by the Salon and received favorable press
1863 Exhibited at the Salon des Refuses
1862 - 1865 Took part in exhibitions organized by the Martinet Gallery
1865 Caused a scandal at the Salon with his paintings “Olympia” and “Christ Mocked”
1880 Solo Exhibition at La Vie moderne
1883 Died April 30th in Paris, France
1884 Exhibition of Manet’s work was held at the Salle de Melpomene of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts
1982 Born January 23rd in Paris, France
