Helmut Newton was born in Berlin, soon emigrated to Australia, and eventually settled in Paris. He was educated at Heinrich von Treitschke Realgymnasium in Berlin from 1928-32, and the American School in Berlin from 1933-35. Newton began his work as a photographer as an apprentice to fashion and theater photographer, Eva (Else Simon) in Berlin from 1936-40. In the mid-1940's he began working as a freelance photographer contributing to such publications as, Jardin des Modes, Elle, Queen, Playboy, Nova, Marie-Claire, Vogue (New York and Paris), and Stern.
Newton is the recipient of numerous awards, including: the Best Photography Award from the Art Director's Club in Tokyo in 1976; the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award in 1977 and 1980; and the Gold Medal from the Art Director's Club in Germany in 1978 and 1979.
