Biography
1841 Born in Charleston, South Carolina
1848 Orphaned and brought to New York City where he was raised by relatives.
1855 Began to study art with Walter Oddie
1858 Enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy
1860 - 1862 Studied in Paris with Gustave Courbet and Charles Gleyre
1863 Returned to the United States and served in the Civil War in the Quartermaster General's Department.
1871 Returned to Europe
1875 Made another trip to Europe after his marriage
1885 Built a home in Cragsmore, NY and became one of the founders of the Cragsmoor Art Colony
1919 Died at Cragsmoor

Exhibited at the National Academy of Design for sixty years
