Biography
1924 Born in San Sebastian on January 10th
1943 - 1946 Studied architecture at the University of Madrid, Spain
1947 Leaves architecture and studies drawing at a private school in Madrid (he also begins to make sculpture)
1954 A group of Franciscan monks commission him to design the four doors of their basilica at Aranzazu (Basque country)
1955 The City of San Sebastian commissions a statue to commemorate Sir Alexander Fleming, for the Ategoprieta Garden; Chillida executes the work in stone. (It subsequently disappears. A new version has now been installed on the promenade of Donostia Bay)
1958 Awarded the prize of the Graham Foundation, Chicago; the committee includes Mies van der Rohe and James Johnson Sweeney
1960 Awarded the Kandinsky Prize by Nina Kandinsky
1964 Awarded Carnegie Prize for his sculpture at Pittsburgh International
1966 Won Wilhelm-Lehmbruck Prize and the Nordrhein-Westfalen Prize at Düsseldorf
1971 Spends four months as Visiting Professor at the Carpenter Center, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Meets the Spanish poet Jorge Guillen and creates wood-engraved illustrations for the poem 'Mas Alla', published by Galerie Maeght two years later
1974 The Diano Marina Prize is awarded in Milan, for his illustrations of Jorge Guillen's book 'Mas Alla'
1975 The Rembrandt Prize of the Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe Stiftung, Frankfurt, is presented to him in San Sebastian
1978 Shares with Willem de Kooning the Andrew W. Mellon Prize. He also receives the Pau i Treva prize in Perpignan.
1981 Receives the Medalla de oro al Merito de las Bellas Artes in Madrid
1982 Presents his large sculpture 'Homage to Jorge Guillen' to the city of Valladolid, on the occasion of the poet's ninetieth birthday; he also contributes a series of illustrations to the book 'Voz Acorde - Homanaje a Jorge Guillen' edited by Carmen Durango
1983 Elected a Royal Academician by the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and receives the European Prize for Fine Arts in Strasbourg
1984 The French government awards him the Grand Prix National des Beaux- Basque Country
1985 Receives the Kaiserring prize, awarded by the city of Goslar (West Germany); Werner Schmalenbach gives the official tribute. Reiner Moritz produces a television film about Chillida. Receives the Wolf Foundation prize for Sculpture in Israel.
1986 Starts working on a monument in Guernica, a commission commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the destruction of the town in the Spanish Civil War; the monument with the Basque title 'Gure Aitaren Etxea' is inaugurated in April 1988.
1986 Receives the Revista Euzkadi prize in Bilbao
1987 Awarded the Principe de Asturias de las Artes Prize in Madrid and the Lorenzo-il-Magnifico Prize in Florence
1988 Receives the Order for Science and Art, awarded by the Federal German Government, succeeding Henry Moore
1991 Received the Imperial Prize created by the Japan Art Association
1993 Elected Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York
1993 Elected Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Boston, Massachusetts
2002 Died on August 19
