Milton Clark Avery, youngest of four children, born March 7 in Sand Bank (later re-named Altmar) New York, to Russell N. and Esther March Avery.

Family moves to Wilson Station, Connecticut (near East Hartford).

Goes to work for Hartford Machine and Screw Company as an aligner and then an assembler.

Works for Underwood Manufacturing Company as an assembler, a latheman and then a mechanic.

Sometime during this period, Avery enrolls at the Connecticut League of Art Students, Hartford, first in a lettering class and subsequently in a life–drawing class. Remains enrolled at the League until 1918. In 1911, he begins to list his occupation as an artist.
1915
First public exhibition of his work in the Fifth Annual Exhibition of Oil Paintings and Sculpture, Annex Gallery, Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, Connecticut.
1917
Begins work at the Travelers Life Insurance Companies in the Liability Claim Department. Works 6pm to midnight in order to paint during the daytime.
1918
Transfers to the School of the Art Society of Hartford.

Wins top honors at the School of the Art Society of Hartford.

First visit to Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he will spend the next several summers.
