Biography
1877 Raoul Dufy is born in Le Havre, eldest of nine.
1891 He is employed as a clerk by a coffee importer and starts taking lessons at the Municipal School of Beaux-Arts. He meets Georges Braque and Othon Friesz.
1895 - 1898 He paints self-portraits of his family, admires paintings of Boudin at Le Havre Museum.
1900 The Municipality of Le Havre grants him an annual scholarship of 1.200 francs allowing him to go to Paris and study in Bonnat’s studio at the Academy of Fine Arts.
1902 Influenced by Monet and the Impressionnists, he paints Parisian scenes and Normandy beaches. He meets Berthe Weil and joins her gallery with Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and Marquet.
1903 He exhibits for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants where he will repeatedly show works until 1936.
1905 - 1907 He takes part in the discussions preceding Fauvisme and participates in the movement.
First one-man show at Berthe Weil gallery.
Representated in Salon d’Automne for the first time.
He works with Marquet at Trouville and with Friesz at Fécamp.
1908 He works with Braque at L’Estaque, near Marseilles, where he adopts a Cezannesque, near Cubist manner.
1909 He visits Munich with Friesz.
1911 He executes woodcuts for illustrations of « Le Bestiaire » by Guillaume Apollinaire.
He installs himself in Montmartre, in the studio in the Impasse Guelma which he keeps until his death. He his introduced to the dress designer Paul Poiret, who helps him to set up a small factory for making fabric designs.
1912 A silk manufacturer from Lyon, Charles Bianchini, shows interest in his work and engaged him as designer, thus providing him the financial security that allows him to paint with complete peace of mind.
1913 He spends the summer in the south of France.
1915 - 1919 He does many woodcuts, for a variety of publications. At the end of the war he is attached to the Musée de la Guerre (War Museum).
1919 He makes several long visits to Venice. His art matures, his manner of drawing becomes more and more calligraphic leading him to discover a pictorial writing completely his own.
1922 - 1923 He travels to Florence, Rome and Sicily.
An important exhibition is given to him in Brussels at The Galerie Le Centaure.
1925 - 1926 He travels to Morocco with Paul Poiret and paints a lot of fabulous watercolors.
He executes, for Poiret’s Seine barges (International Exhibition of The Décorative Arts) 14 tapestries.
1930 He is awarded the Carnegie Prize for his canvas « L’avenue du Bois ».
1932 The Musée du Luxembourg acquires « The Paddock at Deauville »
1934 - 1935 Visits England where he paints at Cowes, Ascot, and London (Bridges on the Thames and the Parlement).
He makes designs for the decoration of the swimming pool of the liner « Normandie ».
1936 He is commissionned to paint the large mural for the Electricity Pavilion at the International Fair in Paris : 600 meters in size, making it one of the largest paintings in the world (now in The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris).
1937 Visits England where he paints scenes from the coronation of George VI.
He becomes a member of the Jury of the Carnegie Institutes and goes on his first trip to the United States.
1938 Journey to Venice and The Loire Castles. Returns with many watercolors.
He paints the decorations for the Singerie in the Botanical Gardens and also for the Palais de Chaillot.
He begins to suffer attacks of arthritis.
1939 - 1949 He flees from German invaders to the South of France, Nice, Vence, Perpignan.
He does researh on moto-tonal qualities and make studies of the dazzeling effects of black on light (Black cargos series).
Visit to Spain, where he goes to a medical spa to treat arthritis..
1950 He travels to the United States where he is one of the first to receive cortisone treatments. He recovers the use of his hands and does the scenic decor for Jean Anouilh’s play « Ring around the Moon ». After a prolonged stay in Tucson in Arizona, he returns to France.
1952 Won the first prize for painting at the 26th Venice Biennale.
1952 He settles in Forcalquier, in the South of France, hoping that the dry climate will further his recovery. He goes to venice for the 26th Biennale, where he wins the firt prize for paintings.
1953 Dufy dies of a heart attack at Forcalquier on 23 March.
He is burried in Nice at the Cemetery of the Monastery of Cimiez.
