Biography
1903 Born: in New York, USA
1920 Enrolled at the Art Students League, where he studied painting with John Sloan, New York, NY
1921 Attended sketch classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and visited the Louvre Museum daily, Paris, France
1923 Studied at Parsons School of Design, The Art Students League, Cooper Union and the Educational Alliance Art School
1929 Awarded joint prize in the Dudensing National Competition
1935 Became a founding member of "The Ten," a group devoted to expressionist and abstract painting
1936 Worked in the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project’s easel painting division
1937 - 1939 Lived in the Arizona desert, near Tucson, AZ
1939 Won U.S. Treasury sponsored nationwide mural competition
1941 Returned to New York, NY
1944 Awarded First Prize, Brooklyn Society of Artists, Annual Exhibition
1944 - 1945 President of the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors
1952 Received purchase prize, Univ of Illinois, Contemporary American Painting
1957 Taught at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY and at the University of California, Los Angeles, CA
1961 Awarded Third Prize, Pittsburg International Exhibition, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA
1963 Awarded Grand Premio, VII Bienal de Sao Paolo, Brazil
1965 Received the the American Academy of Achievement award, Dallas, TX
1966 Studio and contents destroyed by fire
1967 Appointed to The Art Commission, New York, NY
1970 Suffered stroke; confined to wheel-chair, left side paralyzed, continued painting
1972 Elected member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters
1974 Died: in New York, NY
