1910 Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands
1918 Moved to England
1927 - 1928 Winter in London, later attended Accademia Rosso in Florence
1928 - 1931 Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London
1933 Member of the London Group
1933 - 1936 Leading Member of the Objective Abstraction Group
1943 - 1944 Official War Artist
1944 Elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Arts, February 29
1948 - 1957 Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art, London
1954 - 1957 Elected Royal Academician, January 9
1957 Resigned from the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts; from then on spent much time in France, working in Paris and, from 1960, at the Domaine de St Estève, near Lambesc, Provence
1960s Worked in France, Canada and New York; studio in New York, 1968-71
1963 - 1968 Joint editor with Anne Dunn, Sonia Orwell and John Ashbery of the quartely review Art and Literature
1979 Re-elected to the Royal Academy, July 31
