In his late twenties, he decided to abandon a career as a travelling salesman and begin training as an artist in the studio of the landscape painter Jean-Alexis Achard. |

Returns to France to establish his own studio in Paris and met the artists Jean-Leon Gerome and Jean-Louis Hamon, both of whom were at the beginnings of their careers. |
