Benwell was a highly skilled artist, principally in watercolour and gouache although he also worked in oils. His paintings, consistent in their quality and composition, were almost exclusively scenes of Egypt, Jerusalem and Sinai, one of his specialities being caravans on the move with the valued white camel at the head. He also spent some years in India and China up to 1865, and subsequently illustrated two books: “Our Indian Army” and “Three Presidencies of India” (Raffer, Capper), as well as working as an artist for the Illustrated London News. Benwell’s paintings are being increasingly sought after for their obvious investment potential. |
