Did not attend art school but simply studied old and modern masters on his own and painted before nature. |

Sailed to Dordrecht, Holland in 1892, where he quickly made a name for himself, winning the patronage of Queens Emma and Wilhelmina. |

He is often linked to the Hague School. |

He returned to his base in Rochester, New York at the outbreak of World War I. |
