Studied: under his father Russell Smith, and at the University of PA, PAFA, and the Royal Academy, London |

During the Civil War he served in the Navy and later painted on a large scale, the important engagements of the war. After the war Smith made his home at Edgehill, Pennsylvania, and maintained a studio in Philadelphia. He spent many summers in the White Mountains and on the coast of Maine, and attracted considerable renown for his landscapes of these places. For many summers he had a summer home at Casco Bay, ME. |
