Biography
1991 Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona. B.A. in Studio Art with an emphasis in Painting and Art History. Dean's list honors, for three out of five semesters. Recipient of the Regent's academic scholarship. Graduated with honors, Magna Cum Laude.
“There is truth and beauty in what is real, in what has been created, and recreated.” Dyana Hesson paints botanical subjects because they possess the inherent qualities of color, organic line, shadow and light. Her mission is to be truthful.
Growing up in California, Dyana was happiest outdoors. At the age of twelve, her father gave her a camera and she immediately photographed all that was important to her: the trees, the landscape, and the flowers. She ultimately became interested in painting as a way to express things that her camera could not, and so chose oil as her medium because it possessed a fluid quality perfect for her subject matter. As she experimented with layers of thinly applied, carefully blended paint, the results were luminous. Having started studying in California, she completed her degree in studio art at Arizona State University with an emphasis in painting.
In 1992 she moved to Michigan where she was faced with a whole new landscape; spring was an annual “event.” After a lengthy winter she began to anticipate the first daffodils and tulips poking through the soil. In 1996, she returned to the Southwest.
Dyana is always in search of her next painting. She enjoys taking long hikes and outings to the botanical gardens, and truly enjoys the luxury of studying plants close up to combine the details with the natural lighting which becomes luminescent. Hesson has exhibited her work nationwide and has am impressive list of over thirty juried shows and prizes.
