Biography
1892 Born on August 9th at Wurtzburg, in Bavaria
1896 Family moves to Munich
1908 Begins to paint
1911 Spends several weeks as a tour guide in Egypt
1914 As war breaks out, he refuses to be drafted into service. He is kept at a special hospital, assigned to public services within the city, and then discharged as unfit.
1917 Establishes a Munich studio in the small manor of Werneckschlôssl. Meets Rainer Maria Rilke, Ringelnatz and Paul Klee. Has his first exhibition, at the Tannhâuser Gallery in Munich.
1924 Visits the Bauhaus in Weimar; meets Kandinsky, Gropius, Feininger
1925 - 1928 Voyages to Ticino, in Italy, to Algeria and to Paris
1928 Leaves his family behind so that he can move to Paris, where he will live at the Hôtel des Terrasses for 12 years. Meets Brassaï, Van Velde and Bissière. Participates in the exhibition “Abstrakte” in Munich and has his first exhibition in Paris. Meets Jeanne Bucher, who will henceforth assume responsibility for his representation.
1935 Travels in Spain; meets Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell and Adolf Herbst
1939 - 1943 Interned as a German national in the camps at Gurs
1948 Becomes a naturalized French citizen
1952 Laureate of the Jongkind Prize, awarded by the Arches paper company as decided by a jury of art critics
1958 Dies in Paris on December 7th
