East and West, Orient and Occident are not at odds in his painting and philosophy - thus the international critics Will Grohmann in Berlin, Franz Roh in Munich, H.L.C. Jaffe in Amsterdam, Herbert Read in London. Sprotte himself says: "I have lived and worked on two parallel tracks for 20 years. Initially I adhered strictly to an Old Master style in the Cinquecento tradition, tempera and oils on wood. Then in Denmark at the age of 21 I began to work on Chinese and Japanese papers without sketching or correction. Never correct anything! - That's the motto of Chinese painting, whereas the Western tradition is based to a large extent on correction while you work. The tradition of the Far East recommends the artist or writer to keep starting again, until he is able to write or paint without correction." Born in Potsdam near Berlin in 1913, Sprotte left high school in 1931 and went to the Berlin Academy of Arts, where he studied under Emil Orlik, who introduced the technique of the Japanese woodcut to Europe. Sprotte was the master student of Karl Hagemeister from 1930-33. Hagemeister was a pupil of Friedrich Preller 1871-1872 at the Weimar Academy, and Preller in turn enjoyed the protection of Goethe. Siegward Sprotte has been working over 70 years all over Europe, on the West Indies and in the United States . In Kampen on the island of Sylt/West Germany Sprotte has held "studio talks" that have achieved considerable fame. Sprotte spends part of each year in southern Europe (Italy, France, Portugal etc.) and in the United States. |
