Thorneycroft defied his parents who were both sculptors, he began training vigorously-first in his father’s studio and after 1869 at the Royal Academy schools in London, where he studied with Frederic Lord Leighton (1830-1869). One of his highly prestigious public commissions followed including a statue of ‘Cromwell’ in Westminster Hall and ‘Tennyson’ at Trinity College (Cambridge).
