Q. Sakamaki is a New York-based Japanese photographer. Since he moved into the town in 1986, he has focused on deadly conflicts and human rights issues, both nationally and internationally, documenting not only the political landscape but also people’s emotional relationship to many facets of human dramas with a combination of journalistic view and aesthetical sense. His photographs have appeared in books and magazines worldwide and have been exhibited in solo shows in New York and Tokyo. He has received many outstanding awards, including World Press Photo, Olivier Rebbot of Overseas Press Club, and Days International Photojournalism Award. Sakamaki holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University in New York. He has published several books, including the two latest ones; “WAR DNA” covering seven deadly conflicts and “Tompkins Square Park” – photo essay of New York Lower Eastside’s anti-gentrification movement. Sakamaki is also video-documenting. His footage of the Liberian war used in "Liberia: An Uncivil War", was nominated on the 26th Emmy Awards/ News & Documentary/ in 2005. |
