Biography
1946 Born in Withernsea, Yorkshire
1965 Moved to London to study English literature
1969 Commenced painting as an autodidact
1970 Took a SPACE Studio at St. Katherine’s Dock – first real contact with professional artists
1971 Exhibited in a mixed show in Berlin, subsequently invited to teach part-time at the Slade School of Fine Art – first association with the fine art establishment; One-man exhibition at Cardiff Arts Centre
1976 Commercial exhibition with Galleria del Cavellino in Venice as a result of which met Nigel Greenwood and exhibited with him from 1977 to 1987
1979 Since 1979 he has travelled extensively in connection with his work to places such as the Faroe Islands, Lappland, Greenland, Tasmania, Australia, Papua New Guinea and Siberia
1980 - 1981 Arts Council of Great Britain Scholarship, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool
1981 Met his wife, Gerlinde Gabriel
1981 - 1982 Scholarship, Kunsthalle Nuremburg
1984 - 1987 Senior Lecturer in Painting, Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, London
1989 - 1990 DAAD Scholarship, Berlin, Germany
1991 Since 1991 he has lived and worked on a farm in Dorset, England
1993 Guest Professor at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Frankfurt, Germany
1992 - 1996 Lecturer in Postgraduate Painting, Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London
2000 Worked at the studios of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Connecticut
2001 Appointed Visiting Professor to the University of Brighton
2002 Awarded Honorary Fellow of the Arts Institute at Bournemouth
2003 Currently lecturer in post graduate painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.
