Girts Purins was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1937. He came to the United States in 1956 to attend Grand Rapids Junior College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he earned an Associate’s degree in Fine Arts. Purins went on to earn both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. Following the completion of his Master’s degree in 1970, Purins began his long tenure at the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Studio Arts, teaching painting, design, and color theory. Purins has lectured throughout the United States and Australia, and exhibited in numerous states and his home country of Latvia. As of 2002, sixteen of his paintings are in the collection of the State Art Museum of Latvia. He passed away unexpectedly on June 19, 2004, at the age of 67. Girts Purins worked in painting, drawing, lithography and silkscreen printing, short film, graphic design, and theatre stage set design. However, his preferred medium was painting. His most recent style features “geometrical formation and complexly woven rhythmic patterns with measured sequences of shapes, colors, and lines.” |
