Biography
1923 Born and raised in Allentown, PA
1947 BFA in photography from Ohio University
1947 - 1948 Apprentice of Yousuf Karsh – master portrait photographer - in Ottawa (Leonards most influential teacher)
1949 His passion for jazz brings him to New York City’s Greenwich Vilage, where he establishes a studio
late - 1950s In Paris, continues to photograph the prolific jazz scene, while working in fashion and advertising
1956 Chosen to be Marlon Brando’s personal photographer for an extensive research trip to the Far East
1980 Moves from Paris to the island of Ibiza, where he remains until 1988
1985 Releases his first book: The Exe of Jazz
1988 First exhibition of his jazz photographs
1989 Herman’s first US show premiered in 1989 and tours nationally
1991 He moves to New Orleans and immerses himself in the city’s lively jazz scene and exhibites his work around the world in numerous solo shows
1995 He releases his second book: Jazz Memories
1999 Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography from Jazz Photographer’s Association
2000 Excellence in Photography Award from the Jazz Journalists Association
2004 Lifetime Achievement Award form Downbeat Magazine
2005 Hurricane Katrina destroyes his home and studio
2006 Herman releases his third book: Jazz, Giants, And Journeys: The Photography of Herman Leonard
2007 Establishment of The Herman Leonard Jazz Archive
